Dealing with a road accident claim can be a very stressful time. I have spent many years working in the insurance industry and have seen many scenarios and claims. As soon as the incident happens then your road accident claim starts. From this point on there can be many parties involved. Depending on the level of impact there will be police, recovery companies, insurers, other drivers, courtesy car providers, garages, solicitors and anyone else that would feel the need to get involved. This is where it can become stressful and time consuming.

As soon as the impact occurs try to remember to note down as much information as possible. This will help you with your road accident claim. Take down the other parties name and number. At the very minimum always take down the registration plate of the other vehicles involved as your insurer will require this to determine who insures the vehicle. Ideally take photographs of the damage and also the position of the vehicles.

One word of advice I can give is that people change their stories. What they may tell you at the scene may be completely different to what they then report to their insurer. This is where independent witnesses can come in. Make sure that if someone stops and witnessed the incident you take their details. Regardless of how friendly the other driver is you never know what they will say when they are away from the scene.

If you have any doubts about the legality of the other vehicle or drivers concerned do not be afraid to call the police. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Regardless of how minor the injury may be always attend the hospital for a check up. Sometimes at the scene the adrenaline may be running so high that you are not always aware of the injuries you have suffered. If you are pursuing a personal injury claim then there will need to be medical evidence to back up your claims.

How long will a road accident claim take to be completed? Unfortunately there is no way of telling. Some can take weeks others can take months. There are usually a number of third parties and providers involved it can sometimes be difficult to remember who is dealing with what. This is why I would say make sure you keep notes on all conversations. The dates, times and names of the people you have spoken to. Many organisations have call recording but remember they take many many calls in the day. That's why you would need to give them the agent name and time of call.

Another main issue is the liability aspect. As I mentioned above what people may say at the scene can be very different to what they tell their insurer. This is where I have some sympathy for insurance companies. They only deal with the road accident claim after it has occurred. They can only base a decision on liability based on the evidence provided to them. On many occasions it comes down to one person's word against the other. This is where the importance of witnesses can be worth their weight in gold.
